Notes

Utan is a large, powerful, dark-haired man who is somewhat clumsy, especially when not concentrating. He is naturally optimistic, and inclined to over-confidence, 180 cm, 110 kg of mainly muscle.

Raised on one of the planets long-loyal to the Empire that's reasonably removed from the major power centres (the Empire's "Middle America", basically), he's aware that the Empire is flawed, but he was taught that's it's better than the alternatives and he's too occupied with his own life and problems to actually think about it.

He qualified as a ship's engineer. He's completely competent, but not outstanding. He isn't the dedicated type, and, when in dock, would often sneak off 15 minutes early to get to the bar rather than work the complete shift. He has spent most of his active career on the smaller ships of the fleet, thus he has basic training as a ship's pilot, since the extra redundancy of skills is considered essential for ships with small crews. He also acted as the weapons officer, so he has reasonable skills at small arms maintenance and repair.

He does enjoy the odd drink. He has also been fascinated by the process of producing alcoholic drinks from an early age, and, while studying, spent considerable personal time learning the arts of brewing and distilling.

He has received the usual military training, and, while he did decently during training, lack of practice since basic training has eroded his skill with a gun.

His clumsiness has started several bar brawls, so his hand-to-hand combat skills have seen much more practice. He does, however, prefer to try and talk his way out of a fight, and, due to his genial nature and willingness to pay for expensive replacements for spilled drinks, he's often successful at smoothing over sticky situations.

Early in his career, a man he met in a bar made him a very tempting offer, and so, for almost all the 6 years of his active career, he operated a sideline ferrying drugs from the colonies to his contacts. He took to smuggling like a duck to water. His engineering background allowed him to exploit weaknesses in the system to sneak parcels past inspections, and his social skills and contacts allowed him to identify who to bribe when required.

While the sideline paid well, Utan's rather "easy come, easy go" attitude to money has meant that he hasn't actually held on to much of it. The majority was spent on wine, women and experimental verification that the odds actually do favour the house.

He's been on a fair number of planets, but generally divided his time between the shipyards, the more popular bars and entertainment venues. and, in some cases, visiting the seedier areas to secure some exotic drug.

After an exciting trip caused by his failure to adequately seal the interesting airborne hallucinogenic drug he had hidden in life support system, he found himself in trouble he was unable to bribe or talk his way out of. Loyalty, and the optimistic hope that we would be able to trade with them them in the future meant he didn't sell out any of his contacts, and thus he was, in his personal opinion, harshly sentenced to Glennga.

He did manage to carve out an almost tolerable niche there, selling almost entirely not poisonous alcohol to anyone and everyone and managed to setup a few trading links with some of the more corrupt guards. His technical skills (and a few bribes) established him as a technical lackey, which gave him plausible cover for most of his activities. The long term prospects on Glennga were never good though, and he was uite keen on the possibility of cutting his sentence short.
