Glennga

An ice planet which hosts a notorious penal colony. Once a terraforming project run by the Glennga family of the Scholar caste.

The Glennga planned to grind up the waste rock from their mining operations in the massive ring around the system's gas giant and spread the dust over the surface of the ice planet Glennga, in order to lower its albedo and thus raise its temperature. Their plans were scuttled (about 60 years ago) by a mass uprising of their imported Protohuman labourers which had to be put down by Imperial troops. The disgraced Glennga were exiled to the ice planet together with the labourers, and the Empire turned it into a penal colony. The prisoners are forced to implement a sad mockery of the original terraforming plan—they mine rock from below Glennga's surface and distribute it over the ice manually—obviously at a snail's pace.

Shortly after Star Captain Shihov's arrival at the penal colony, a suspicious beacon signal from the mining station was picked up by the fleet in orbit above Glennga. It is believed that infiltrators from the Tribe gained access to the station and found it inhabited by descendants of the original Mugorokan protohumans, who apparently devolved into some sort of cargo cult skilled in rock carving. Imperial investigators found the station stripped of electronics and equipment and boobytrapped with explosives. The fate of the protohuman survivors is unknown.
